Established in 1881St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1881 to serve the German community 11 miles northeast of the city of Columbus in what was known as the Bismark Township. Since this was a German community, the church services were conducted in the German language. It wasn't until 1934 that the congregation voted to conduct meetings in English and that a German service be held once a month. In March of 1943, it was agreed to have all services in English. The church is located just north of the Calvary Cemetery whose early tombstones date back to 1865.
The physical appearance of the church has changed over the years with an addition to the east side of the church, which eventually became the kitchen and bathrooms. Then additions to the west of the church were made in the 1990's moving the sanctuary to the new part of the building. In August of 2006, St. John's held it's 125th year anniversary. The reason St. John's has Shell Creek in it's name is because Shell Creek is located just a short distance north of the church. We are also called the church with a heart, because our drive is in the shape of a heart. You are invited to become part of St. John's where: *The Gospel of Jesus Christ is lived as well as preached. *We are nourished by God's Word for service in the world. *Your participation, leadership, and ideas are cherished. *You are encouraged to think for yourself and ask questions. *You will meet friends who care about you. *Your faith and trust in God will grow. *You will be part of a healing community that makes a difference in our broken world. This is a dynamic community of faith that worships......learns......serves......shares......and witnesses to the love of God in Christ Jesus. |
